August 7, 2010 Burlesque Workshop and Show with Amanda Ryder.
Connect with the sexier side of you! Always wanted to try Burlesque, but didn't know where to start? Then these classes are perfect for you!
Kalima Tribal is proud to present Amanda Ryder of Cabaret Risque and Lunasea Burlesque in Greensboro NC in a day of workshops on the art of Burlesque. Amanda was with us last year for Tribal Sampler where her's was our most popular workshop and then she and her friends brought the house down that night at Tribal Frolic.
Basics of Burlesque -- 10:00 am to 12:00 pm
This workshop will provide you the very basics needed for your beginner Burlesque arsenal, and help you unlock your inner diva! Use what you have learned in class to put on a private "show" for a loved one, as a jumping-off point for a newly-imagined career in Burlesque, or as a Burlesque refresher course. We will strut and dance to classic Burlesque music from the 50's and 60's, with a dash of more contemporary music thrown into the mix. Don't forget to wear your sassiest outfit and a rockin' pair of heels if you want to immerse yourself into the full experience.
Section 1 : Movement
Quick warm-up and stretch
Burlesque Posture
Pose -- Find a pose that suits your personality, and accentuates your assets!
Strut -- Develop your signature walk, and find creative ways to cover all of the stage area
Basics -- Burlesque standards like the bump and grind, chest and booty shimmy, as well as short combinations
Section 2 Practical Stage Exercises
We'll work individually, in pairs, and in groups, with a variety of exercises to tap into the imaginative and funny side of you, and make connections with your audience. You'll get your chance to use what you learned in the first half of the class to strut your stuff on a stage!
Expressing emotion
Eye contact
Entrances and exits
Utilizing the space
The Big Finish/Reveal
Now, here is your pre-class "homework": Find your Burlesque stage name! It can be a reflection of your personality, or draw attention to physical assets...It can be naughty...suggestive...cute...Be creative...Go crazy with it! We'll use your name during class and to introduce you when it's your time to "perform".
The Sexy Chair 1:00 -- 3:00
A simple chair can take an ordinary Burlesque routine to a whole new sensual level. Often used merely as a prop to hold other props, like fans and boas, or as a place to perch while removing a stocking, this class turns an ordinary chair into an intimate partner. The choreography for this class is physically demanding, requiring increased strength, balance and flexibility and, as such, is geared to the student with dance experience. Interested beginner students are certainly welcome to attend, and will find this class well worth the effort. Adaptations can easily be made for any student unable to safely manage the choreography. Because of the physical demands, class will start with a 15 minute stretch and warm-up prior to moving into instruction and choreography. The choreography will be broken down into it's basic parts, with repetition of difficult maneuvers until participants are confident of their mastery. Then all the elements of this routine will be put together into the completed choreography and repeated as time permits.
Things to remember: Please bring a yoga mat for the stretch. Also, please bring a pair of elbow-length gloves. This is the only clothing removal that will be done in the choreography. Copies of the music will be available to participants for $1, or a blank CD exchange. Chairs will be available at the venue to use, but feel free to bring your own chair if you would be more comfortable doing so. Look for a chair that is sturdy (no loose joints), narrow in the seat, has a back of medium height, and will not tip easily. Clothing should be close-fitting, and comfortable. Footwear is your choice, but I would suggest bare feet, jazz, or character shoes, or any other light, flexible, stable shoe.
At the Looking Glass Artist Collective, 405 N. Lee Street, Salisbury, NC. Each workshop is $25 or $40 fore the whole day. Then join us tha night for rockin old fashion Vaudevill Burlesque show with comics, magicians, music, and dance. Show starts at 8:00, $10 at the door.

September 25, 2010 Estatic Dance: Technique, Inspiration, & Response
"When one learns to improvise dance, the feeling is akin to flying. The goal is to allow your body to react, without thought, to the music. This is a pure thing. This is a joyous thing. This is an important life lesson. When the music hits you, you don't have time to consult your ego and ask it, 'shall I pose with one arm up and do a little shimmy?' You let the music toss you around." Carla Monnich from her webpage www.TranceDancer.net.
Kalima Tribal is proud to host Carla Monnich of Turku World Music Ensemble in a days workshop on Estatic Dance. Carla specializes in techniques geared towards teaching dancers to improvise joyously and spontaneously and has taught her techniques at Pennsic and other events across the country for many years. We are very honored to have her teaching a workshop for us here in Salisbury .
In these worshops you will learn how to push past the obsticles that keep you from flowing without thought.
10:00 to 12:00 -- During the first session, we will learn and participate in a Guedra (North African Trance Dance)
1:00 to 3:00 -- The second session will focus on unique exercises intended to get you riding the music to that ultimate dance buzz.
At Artemesia Artworks & Yoga Studio, 323 West Harrison Street, Salisbury, NC. $25 for each class, $40 for the full day. Bring a light lunch and wear comfortable clothes, something that you can move in. PLEASE pre-register. We can only have 15 people in this space and still have room to move. (and that may be pushing it) If you do not pre-register we may have to turn you away at the door. If there is enough demand in advance we can try to find a bigger space, but if we don't know you are coming we can't make changes. To pre-register send payment to lglwitch@carolina.rr.com on PayPal. Include your name and email address and indicate you are registering for the Estatic Dance workshop. If you do not pre-pay we cannot reserve your spot as we expect this to be a very popular workshop.
When I first started dancing it was because dancing frees my soul. Come free your soul with us on September 25. Bring a new level of expression, spirit, and artistry to your dance. .
